The Mother of all Worriers

I know you are all thinking that the title of this post is describing me, but guess what!? There is another mother who is even more gifted at worrying than myself! It's really about MY mother!!! Bless her little heart. I get a phone call a few times a month to let me know about the most recent freak disaster that is sure to occur to my children due to neglect or oversight. I do appreciate her motivation, but it doesn't help my anxiety. I try and take the casual, calloused, "yeah, thanks, mom, I'll think about that," approach, but internally I feel my stomach begin to churn and I lose sleep for days afterwards. Her latest call came tonight to let me know about a story that would be shown on the ten o'clock news. It was about a family who had recieved all kinds of demeaning and threatening comments on their blog. I know nothing else. I try and stay pretty disconnected with the world by not watching TV. Ok, truth is I am too cheap to pay for it, and I like not having it, so there! Anyways.... of course, I began worrying as soon as I non-chalantly hung up the phone. I have no idea about what kind of wackos are out there. I tried to set all my profile things to highest security. I don't know. I have been tinkering with the idea of going private. After all, I'm sure there aren't that many people who read this thing anyway! What do ya think? And if I do decide to go private, I only have two questions..... who wants to be invited, and how in the world do I do any of this???

If you decide to, please invite me vandegraaff@gmail.com. I have thought about the idea too. There is an option to block comments (Joe and Kristin VDG for example don't have the comments there for an option). I guess it all depends. Good luck with your decision.

Invite me! All you have to do is go to your settings and set the persmissions to "only people I choose". Then you have to send us an invitation to have persmission to view your blog. Pretty easy. But I'll be honest with you. I've been blogging for 3 years and I've never had anything funky happen. Do what is best for your family though.

I have thought about the same thing. Sometimes I feel paranoid like there are stalkers all around just waiting for Jez to leave for work. I try not to be specific in where we live, but it wouldn't be hard to figure out by the pictures and landmarks. And I don't know a whole lot of Jez and Trina's out there so it would probably be really easy to search.

Anyway... if you do go private I want to be invited! You have to invite by email. Mine is T followed by my last name at Yahoo.com :)

My dad told me I needed to watch the news about something on Blogs, but I must have missed it. I have thought of going private also. Invite me too if you will.

I went private when our baby was born. I don't think it makes ut perfectly safe but I feel better knowing that I have alittle more control of the people who can access it. It's super easy to do (email me if you have questions after the instructions already left) and I would love to be invited. amy.monroy@gmail.com

I keep debating it too, but part of me thinks you just can't run and hide from everything. I also just don't want to because then I might miss out on connecting with old friends, you know? Anyway, if you do - I definitely need an invite! trudd82@gmail.com

I have this part of my blog that tells me basically who is viewing my blog. You could add it to yours for free to see if it calms your nerves. I don't think I will go private unless I start seeing things that concern me. I've reconnected with some amazing friends from college and high school because they could access me and I could access them. If you have any questions, let me know! If you do go private, please invite me!

I have loved finding so many old friends and lots of family members...and when I come across one that is private it's really sad to me because unless it's someone that I know how to contact otherwise or would contact otherwise, I don't get to reconnect with them. For that reason I have not gone private. I like to find others and I hope others are able to find me. I personally don't think there is much that anyone could do with the info on blogs. So they have our names and pictures. What are they going to do with it? Even if I mention where we live once in a while I don't think it means they could necessarily find us. But then we aren't in the phone book like most people are because we don't have a landline phone. I also have a widget on my blog that tells me where people are visiting from...either the website they linked from or the city they are coming from. I have never noticed anything on there that I wasn't pretty sure was someone I know or someone just harmlessly blog surfing. If I started seeing someone coming regularly from somewhere and/or leave weird comments I might start to worry. But meanwhile, I don't. Maybe I'm not paranoid enough, though. Who knows.

p.s. You can also set your comments so that they get emailed to you first and you have to approve them in order for them to show up on your blog.
